Registration Still Available for HOMER Energy Workshop in Irvine

HOMER Energy's CEO, Dr. Peter Lilienthal, will conduct a one-day, pre-conference workshop on microgrid design and feasibility analysis on Tuesday, May 20, at the Microgrid Global Summit 2014 in Irvine, CA. "This is a great opportunity to meet colleagues who are using HOMER for some very interesting applications," says Dr. Lilienthal. The workshop will examine modeling and analytical requirements for microgrids and provide training into the effective use of HOMER. Seating is limited. Click here to register.

Report Examines Microgrids in Asia Pacific

The market leaders for remote microgrids in Asia Pacific are India, Indonesia, and the Philippines because electrification enhancement is the top priority in these nations. Australia is another top proponent of remote microgrids due to its unique need for power supplies to off-grid or isolated mining sites. Navigant Research forecasts that annual grid-tied and remote microgrid capacity in the nine select countries will grow from 37.0 MW in 2013 to 597.3 MW by 2023 at a compound annual growth rate of 32.1%. more

Economics of Grid Defection Webinar Replay and Discussion Area

The very successful webinar on the "Economics of Grid Defection" is now available as a replay. You can access it as well as the slide deck here. The page also contains a link to join the discussion group and access the HOMER files used in the analysis.

Beta Version of HOMER Professional Coming Soon

HOMER Energy will soon release the beta version of HOMER Professional -- the new and future platform for all HOMER products and enhancements. We greatly appreciate the feedback we got from our "First Look" team, and now we are ready to do a broader beta release. The beta program will have limited spaces, so if you're interested, be sure to get on the list now. You'll then get an email when the beta is ready for download.

HOMER Energy's Microgrid Deployment Workshop - Barcelona

HOMER Energy will be conducting its next Microgrid Deployment Workshop in Barcelona, Spain, on September 22-23, 2014. The speaker lineup is currently being finalized, and will be posted within the next week. Co-organized by Trama TecnoAmbiental (TTA), the event will closely examine successful microgrid deployment in remote, off-grid, and grid-tied scenarios. Save the dates, and we look forward to seeing you all in Barcelona! visit website

On Deck: HOMER User Certification

Are you interested in earning certification as a qualified HOMER user? When we asked about HOMER results certification in a previous newsletter, we received several inquiries that went beyond specific models and results. We hear excellent feedback on our many training sessions online and in person, so are considering more comprehensive training that, when completed successfully, would earn you the recognition as someone who is highly qualified in the HOMER software. World Bank Book: How To Promote Mini-Grids in Africa

The World Bank has published a new book called "From The Bottom Up: How Small Power Producers and Mini-Grids Can Deliver Electrification and Renewable Energy in Africa." The book provides a practical guide to government officials and private developers on ground-level regulatory and policy issues that must addressed in order to promote commercially sustainable connected and isolated mini-grids. Successful and unsuccessful real world examples are drawn from Tanzania, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Nepal. For a free download of the book, click here.

A Building-Level Microgrid with Integrated PV and Advanced Energy Storage

A recent presentation within the Energy Storage Virtual Summit on April 17 examined an energy storage (ES) deployment at Pualani Manor in Honolulu, HI, in which 50kW/150kWh of ES modules are used for renewable leveling and load flattening. The project is capable of integrated PV and "smart building / integrated islanding" functions for back-up power without utilizing a diesel gen set. California Public Utility Commission Issues Microgrid Report

The report concludes that the role of the electric utility will change, and suggests considering the utility as a distribution system operator, akin to an independent system operator on the transmission side. Additionally, there is a need to develop appropriate standards and requirements to ensure that microgrids interconnect and interact with the distribution grid in a reliable and safe manner. download paper

Clean Energy Hybrid Mini-Grids In Remote Areas - An Investment Opportunity

To achieve a realistic investment opportunity from mini-grid applications in developing countries, a wide range of interrelated issues must be addressed including the assessment of feasibility in target locations, technology needs, policy advice, capacity building, and practical implementation in targeted local communities. This UNEP briefing points out that a bottom-up approach to address customer demand is required. view paper

Energy-Autonomous Smart Microgrids

This presentation, which was part of the Microgrid Rodeo event in February 2014 at the University of Texas at Austin, looks at the concept of dividing the grid into a collection of nearly energy-autonomous sub-systems. The author, Gerard J.M. Smit at the University of Twente Enschede, the Netherlands, outlines what is needed for a series of autonomous microgrids, the stakeholders in such a scenario, and the importance of correct prediction, planning, and control. view slides

HOMER Energy Helps Examine World Interest in Alaska

Alaska's remote micro grid villages, compact road systems and vast renewable energy resources give it first mover advantage in technology development that the rest of the world is beginning to notice. A discussion panel within the Business of Clean Energy in Alaska Conference, May 1-2 in Anchorage explored ways that Alaskans can apply their experiences to a much larger world market that is demanding resilient distributed energy systems. HOMER Energy's CEO, Dr. Peter Lilienthal, participated in the discussion.

Call for Microgrid Deployment Workshop Hosts

HOMER Energy is looking to host future Microgrid Deployment Workshops during the months of January or February, April or May, July, and September or October of 2015. Our target locations are Australia, India, Malaysia, the Phillippines, Central or South America, northeastern United States, western Africa, southern Africa, or other locations where there is growing interest in microgrids and a concentration of users interested in learning and sharing about HOMER. Event hosts will need to have access to or information on local venues that can provide room for about 100 attendees plus catering services. If interested in helping host an event, contact Daniel Coran, Program Manager, at +1-815-310-3343 or info@microgridconference.com.
