HOMER Energy's Microgrid Deployment Workshop, scheduled for November 8-9, 2013 in Cancún, Mexico, will examine technology advances and best practices for deploying microgrids in remote, island, and off-grid environments. Co-located with the Solar World Congress 2013, the two-day Workshop will focus on microgrid market dynamics, advances in controls and management, energy storage applications, project financing and procurement, construction / operation strategies, and more.

Status of Remote Microgrids Market Worldwide

Taken together, developing nations will represent 80% of total growth in energy production/consumption by the year 2035, according to International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates. The latest report from Navigant Research forecasts that the global remote microgrid market already exceeds $3 billion in hardware, and software sales and will grow to more than $8 billion by 2020. Aquion Energy and Siemens To Develop Microgrid and Grid Energy Storage Systems

Siemens' Sinamics S120 inverter solution and Aquion's AE12 Battery Module product are currently under high voltage test at Aquion's R&D facility in Pittsburgh, and will undergo additional joint testing at Siemens' Alpharetta facility. Based on Aquion's AHI battery technology, the module is an 18 kilowatt hour system designed to provide high performance, long-duration daily cycling for microgrid and grid applications. [more]

Enphase Energy Announces Clinton Global Initiative 'Commitment to Action' for Nigerian Microgrid Project

The microgrid system's use of microinverter technology, designed and provided by Enphase, will allow local non-specialist electricians and laborers to install and maintain all aspects of the system. Strawman Proposal for a Taxonomy of Renewable Penetration Levels

This strawman taxonomy provides clear distinctions between different levels of renewable penetration. By basing the criteria on the architecture and control of the power system, it avoids the ambiguity that is inherent in a taxonomy based on the percentage of renewable penetration or contribution. The University of Texas Forms Microgrid Task Force

Presently, the major technical challenges of microgrids are in control, load and source management, and studying the integration of significant stochastic sources, such as wind and solar power, and the degree to which actual electric vehicle charging is uncorrelated in a residential neighborhood. Microgrids are inherently dynamic, with variance in sources and loads. The UT Microgrid Team will seek out how to manage this time-bearing phenomenon in a very small area. [more]

Standard Solar and Solar Grid Storage Collaborate on Pioneering Commercial Solar Microgrid

The 402.3 kW project is a grid-interactive energy storage system co-located with a 1,368 panel photovoltaic array, creating one of the nation's first commercial-scale microgrids. Located at Konterra's corporate headquarters in Laurel, MD, the system is estimated to generate 20 percent of the building's annual power. [more]

California Energy Commission Awards $1.7 Million for Military Microgrid Project

The project will integrate on-site flat-plate and concentrating photovoltaic technology with energy efficiency, energy storage and other technologies to provide reliable power and support critical base functions at Camp Pendleton. Soitec Supplies Solar CPV System for Microgrid Project in Madagascar

Fondation Énergies pour le Monde (Paris) has completed installation of a 2.28 kW Soitec concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) system, which combined with pre-existing wind turbines powers a microgrid for a small community on the island of Madagascar. [more]

Arista Power Receives Contract To Continue Developing Intelligent Microgrid System

Under the next phase of the program, Arista Power will continue work towards the standardization of interfaces and development of an open communication protocol allowing for a plug-and-play environment to be leveraged by military microgrids deployed in forward operating bases for the U.S. Army.
